Issaquah School District Board of Directors Candidate Forum – Hosted by Issaquah Highlands Council

On Wednesday, October 6, 2021, I participated in the Issaquah School District Board of Directors Candidate Forum hosted by the Issaquah Highlands Council. I shared information about myself and my top priorities. It was a great discussion. Watch the session below! I think that it will give you a very clear picture of the differences between candidates.

INSPIRING FACILITIES

In August 2019, I was one of a group who ceremoniously removed the first shovel of dirt for the groundbreaking of Cedar Trails Elementary School.  And today, 2 years later, it was a thrilling and emotional experience to attend the ribbon cutting!

The team that made it happen!

The opening of Cedar Trails Elementary is part of the Issaquah School District’s building expansion plan to meet the needs of our growing population.  Facilities that inspire learning and serve all our students is not only top of mind for the Issaquah School Board, it is also one of my Top 10 Priorities which are the foundation for my service as a school board member, and for my run for re-election.

Growth

In August 2019, I was one of a group who ceremoniously removed the first shovel of dirt for the groundbreaking of the Cedar Trails Elementary School.  It has been thrilling to watch this new school rise up and become a hub of construction activity.

And did you know that a variety of sustainable strategies have been used to enhance Issaquah School District’s learning environments while reducing maintenance and operational costs? Since 2001, new construction has increased the total building space 36.2% while energy usage has decreased 2%.

School building expansion to meet the needs of our growing population has been top of mind for the Board in the last couple of years and will continue to be important in the future.

Community

Because COVID put a crimp in our ability to get together as a community, it was especially great to attend the Issaquah Highlands Juneteenth, Celebration Global Grub & Groove event last month.  This fun gathering of food and music will be happening again July 23, Aug 13, and Sept 10 – maybe I’ll see you there!

One of my fondest pre-COVID memories is from August 2019 where I had fun waving the start flag at the Annual Challenge Series Race.  This gravity car race allows those with mental and physical disabilities the experience of a thrilling soapbox derby-type race while riding in a car with a co-pilot.

Engaging with the community and meeting folks brings me much joy.  It is also important work.  As a School Board member it is an honor to represent all members of the district, and events such as this race are a great way to get to know people, and for them to get to know me.

Sydne Mullings hold the checkered flag at the soapbox derby.

I look forward to participating in more events over the summer as we continue to move past pandemic restrictions.

Graduation Season

As we wrap up the 2021 graduation season, I am thrilled to know that our graduation rate which has risen over each of the last few years, continued to increase even during the COVID 19 pandemic. This is a true testament to the dedication of our faculty, students, and families.

Being a part of the 2021 commencement ceremonies for Liberty, Issaquah, Skyline and Gibson Ek High Schools brought back memories of another graduation that really touched my heart.   As a relatively new Board Member, in June 2019 I was invited to speak at the Liberty High School graduation ceremony.  I was honored to be invited to speak to the young graduates and share wisdom and words of encouragement. This was an emotional moment for me. To witness the culmination of so much hard work and commitment coming together as these young people took a big step into adulthood.  It is a day I will long remember.

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES

During my tenure with the Issaquah School Board I have participated in some wonderful events, met many incredible people, and helped tackle and solve challenges big and small. The pandemic certainly changed our ability to work together in person, but regardless – we endeavored to keep moving forward and working hard for the good of the kids and the entire community.

There is much good news to share about graduations, growth, and community connection which I will share in future posts.

(Issaquah, Washington, May 17, 2021)

Sydne Mullings is pleased to announce her bid for re-election to the Issaquah School Board for District 4 this coming November. “I would love your support as I look to leverage the experiences I have gained over the last two years to continue the important work of providing exceptional educational experiences for all students.”

Ms. Mullings was elected to the Issaquah School Board in 2019.  “Throughout this unprecedented pandemic, my commitment to listening to differing perspectives and making difficult decisions has been strengthened. Technology is also a passion for Ms. Mullings.  She holds a Master of Science Degree in Human-Computer Interaction from DePaul University, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in International Politics from Penn State University and has spent the last 20 years working in the Healthcare, Financial Services, and Professional Services industries. In Ms. Mullings’ professional career, she has held roles in enterprise consulting, large scale program management and people management. Currently, Ms. Mullings works as General Manager responsible for leading the Central Marketing Organization for Microsoft US.   “I have significant experience in partnering with others in helping them to identify new opportunities and evaluate potential solutions to help reach goals. I would value the opportunity to continue to leverage this experience with the Issaquah School District.”
